Follow these 6 steps to open your free Commerzbank StartKonto online. The entire process takes about 6 minutes.
Fill Out the Online Application Form
Click the "Open StartKonto" button to begin. Select "StartKonto" account type, confirm you are under 28, enter personal details and your German address. Choose login credentials and submit to receive your IBAN.
Tip: Make sure to check the box "I am under 28 years old" - this ensures you get the free StartKonto instead of the regular GiroKonto.
Receive Important Documents by Email
After saving your application, Commerzbank will send you: application confirmation with your new IBAN, Ident-ID for identity verification, pre-contractual information, and order confirmation confirming your StartKonto status.
Tip: Check your spam folder if you don't receive emails within a few minutes. Save all documents in a safe place.
Verify Your Identity
Use the Video Chat (IDENT app) for fastest verification (5-10 min). Alternatively, use PostIdent at a Deutsche Post office or visit a Commerzbank branch. Have your passport/ID ready.
Activate photoTAN
Within 1-2 business days after identity verification, download the photoTAN app. Log in using your participant number and PIN. Follow instructions to activate.
Tip: If you don't activate photoTAN within 3 hours, you'll receive an activation letter by post and won't be able to activate online anymore for security reasons.
Receive Your Girocard PIN
Your PIN arrives by mail separately, a few days before the card. Keep it safe and do not share it with anyone.
Tip: Store the PIN in a secure password manager or write it down in a safe place until your card arrives.
Receive Your Girocard
Your Girocard arrives 4-7 days later. Activate it by using it at an ATM with your PIN. You can now use your account fully - all completely free until you turn 28!
